Acting Commissioner of the Rent Control Department, Frederick Opoku, has raised alarm over the department’s severe underfunding, noting that it received only GH¢60,000 to operate its 66 offices nationwide during the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking on Adom FM, Mr Opoku asked how the department can effectively discharge its mandate with such limited resources. “GH¢60,000 to run Rent Control for three months? What’s the meaning of this? The Finance Minister and all of them should listen to this and act on it,” he said.
He highlighted the department’s crucial role in addressing housing‑related concerns and protecting the interests of tenants and landlords. Opoku added that the second‑quarter allocation brought the total to GH¢120,000 for the entire country, which he deemed inadequate for 66 offices.
“For 66 offices, what do you mean? How do you expect Rent Control to function?” he added, urging the Finance Minister to review the allocation and provide adequate resources so the department can respond to housing and tenancy complaints across Ghana.
