Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon, has won the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) for a record-extending ninth time, reclaiming the trophy after falling short in last year's competition.
PRESEC emerged tops in the 2026 grand finale, held on Thursday night at the UG Premier Domes, University of Ghana, scoring 40 points against Accra Academy's 33 and St Augustine's College's 27. The victory caps a competition that began with 174 schools competing nationwide before being whittled down to the three grand finalists.
The final brought together three schools with sharply contrasting NSMQ histories. PRESEC arrived as the competition's most decorated side, having previously lifted the trophy eight times, and was looking to bounce back after a quarter-final exit the previous year that had denied the school a chance to extend its dominance. The "Ɔdadeɛ" boys secured their place in the final with a commanding 44-point semi-final performance, ahead of St John's School on 25 points, eliminating both St John's and Tamale Senior High School along the way.
St Augustine's College, chasing a third championship and its first title since 2019, made a third consecutive grand finale appearance, having also reached the decider in 2024 and 2025. The Cape Coast school booked its spot with a 52-point semi-final win over five-time champions Prempeh College, who finished on 47, and 2001 winners Pope John SHS & Minor Seminary, who managed 28.
Accra Academy entered the final as the tournament's underdog and first-time finalist, having broken a run of quarter-final exits stretching back to 2019 to reach the grand finale for the first time in the school's history, a qualification that sparked wide celebration among students and alumni.
