For the first time, AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine and Endeavour Mining organized the West Africa Mine Rescue and Emergency Response Competition (WAMRERC 2026) at the Obuasi site. The five‑day contest gathered emergency response teams from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal to evaluate their technical abilities and foster collaboration across the West African mining sector.

Under the theme “Together, Saving Lives Through Preparedness and Excellence,” the event aimed to provide a platform for mine rescue professionals to share expertise and create a regional network that could coordinate responses to emergencies.

Opening remarks were delivered by Dr Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, who stressed that the competition was more than a trophy hunt. He urged participants to use the event to sharpen technical competencies, forge lasting partnerships and strengthen the industry’s capacity to protect lives. He added that a company’s performance should be measured not only by economic output but also by its ability to safeguard workers and communities.

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, echoed this sentiment, calling for heightened focus on human life protection in mining operations. He noted that the sector’s contributions to mineral production, investment, employment and national development would mean little if workers could not return home safely after their shifts. The Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safety across the mining sector and encouraged teams to assess capabilities, identify weaknesses and improve readiness.

Beyond the competition, organisers highlighted WAMRERC 2026’s role in promoting professional networking and knowledge‑sharing among mine rescue teams in the region. The initiative reflects a shared responsibility among mining companies to strengthen emergency response systems and protect workers, regardless of commercial competition.

As the event concludes, industry stakeholders anticipate that the lessons learned and relationships built will enhance safety protocols and emergency preparedness across West Africa’s mining landscape.
