National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah called for an end to attempts to equate Dr Kwame Nkrumah with other nationalists who helped Ghana gain independence. He said Nkrumah deserves sole recognition as the founder of Ghana because he united the Gold Coast, Ashanti Kingdom, Northern Territories and Trans‑Volta Togoland into a single nation.
Speaking at the launch of NkrumahFest on Saturday, September 19, 2026, Mr Asiedu Nketiah noted that the event, launched by Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah‑Kofi Buah, aims to promote the study of Dr Nkrumah’s works and preserve his legacy. He argued that before Nkrumah’s emergence, there was no Ghana.
He maintained that no other politician or nationalist could match Nkrumah’s contribution to the formation of Ghana, stating, “No other politician and no other nationalist can compare themselves to the one and only Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah.”
Observers note that the call reflects ongoing debates within Ghanaian politics over national identity and historical credit. The NDC’s stance may influence future commemorations and educational curricula regarding Ghana’s independence.
