Technical teams at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) have initiated a full-scale restoration effort after a major system disturbance early Thursday morning disrupted electricity supply to broad sections of the country.

The power outage occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. following a sudden fault along the critical Akosombo–Volta transmission line. According to GRIDCo, the line fault activated automated safety protocols across the national network, causing the sudden shutdown of several generating units at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Station as well as key thermal plants linked to the grid.
The safety-induced tripping was designed to prevent severe structural damage to the national power network, though it resulted in an immediate power deficit that cut supply to major load centers.
Engineers and emergency response teams managed to isolate the affected transmission segment shortly after the incident, allowing the gradual restoration of generating units and distribution points.
GRIDCo confirmed that restoration efforts are progressing in phases to preserve system stability and avoid further voltage collapses. Power has already been restored to several bulk supply points across key regions, with full service expected to resume as additional thermal plants come back online throughout the day.
The utility operator expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to commercial activities and domestic consumers, assuring the public that engineers are actively monitoring grid stability to ensure a complete and secure return to normal operation.
