Meghan Markle Faces Public Re‑evaluation Amid Father’s Abuse Allegations

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has been under scrutiny since allegations of sexual abuse against her father, Thomas Markle, were revealed. The claims, which have been denied by Thomas as "lies" aimed at destroying his reputation, have resurfaced after a letter from his first wife, Roslyn Loveless, was shared with Meghan in 2019.

Meghan has kept the matter largely out of the public eye for seven years, while still sharing her life through television series, interviews and a memoir by Prince Harry. The new information, however, could change how the public views her, a figure who has long faced criticism for allegedly cutting ties with family and friends.

In December 2025, when Thomas Markle was hospitalized in the Philippines for a leg amputation, media speculation rose over whether Meghan would reach out to him. A letter delivered to her father, later revealed to contain knowledge of the abuse allegations, suggested she was aware of the claims and that she believed he would never see his grandchildren.

Thomas Markle has called the allegations "sick lies" that are attempting to destroy his reputation. His daughter, Samantha Markle, has also dismissed the claims as "fake news" and "clickbait," stating that no legal action would be taken due to a lack of evidence.

Meghan’s supporters argue that racism and sexism have contributed to her negative portrayal, while critics point to her perceived distance from family as a sign of coldness. The emerging narrative, however, shows a more complex backstory that may elicit greater empathy.

According to a YouGov survey conducted earlier this month, only 22% of respondents held a positive view of Meghan, compared with 49% who disliked her. The data suggests that while fascination remains, affection is not yet widespread.

As Meghan returns to the UK with Prince Harry and their children, the unfolding story may prompt a more rounded public perception, though it remains uncertain whether this will translate into broader acceptance.
