President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Gondar, Ethiopia, on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to inaugurate the Megech Irrigation Development Project. The ceremony marked the completion of a dam and reservoir that had been stalled for years before Prime Minister Abiy revived the initiative three years ago.

The 870‑hectare dam can store 185 million cubic metres of water, with plans to irrigate 17,000 hectares of farmland and supply clean drinking water to Gondar and nearby satellite towns. The project is expected to lift agricultural production and enhance food security across the region.

President Mahama praised the Ethiopian government and people for their resilience and commitment to the project, calling it an investment that will benefit future generations. He is scheduled to travel to Bahir Dar on Saturday, October 24, to chair the 12th Tana High‑Level Forum on Security in Africa, where leaders will discuss peace, governance and security challenges on the continent.
