Kojo Sah Nkrumah, a 20‑year‑old labourer from Tarkwa Railway Station, was fined GH¢120,000 by the Tarkwa Circuit Court for possessing and selling cannabis and tramadol without lawful authority. The court, presided over by Ms Bernice Mensimah Ackon, convicted him on his own plea and ordered a three‑year prison term if the fine is not paid.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Samuel Ahiabor, explained that the complainants were police officers from the Western Central Regional Formed Police Unit (RFPU) Base in Tarkwa. Nkrumah was arrested at about 0130 hours on 21 January 2025 during a routine night patrol led by Chief Inspector Issahaque Yahaya. The officers extended their patrol to the railway station, where they found Nkrumah seated under a shed selling what they suspected to be narcotic drugs.
A search of a takeaway bag in his possession uncovered 81 pieces of wrapped dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, seven sachets of tramadol and GH¢240 in cash, believed to be proceeds from the sale. The officers escorted him to Tarkwa Police Station with the exhibits, which were sent to the Forensic Crime Laboratory in Accra on 25 April 2025. A report received on 13 May 2025 confirmed the plant material tested positive for delta‑9‑tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with a gross weight of 139.61 grammes.
With the fine imposed, Nkrumah faces a three‑year prison term if he fails to pay. The case highlights ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking in the Western Region.
