A tipper truck collided with a line of commercial vehicles, motorbikes and tricycles on the Krofrom‑Tafo‑Nhyiaeso stretch of the Ashanti Region at about 4 p.m. The crash left one person dead and several others injured.
ASP Paul Ayaaba Asore, Tafo‑Pakrono Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, said the tipper truck, driven by Clement Ofori, struck roughly seven vehicles and motorbikes, including Urvans and Pragya tricycles carrying passengers from Kumasi CBD and Kejetia.
The accident also damaged shops along the road, destroying paints and other construction materials. An unidentified male passenger in a tricycle died at the scene, while others were taken to nearby hospitals. The Ghana National Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service rescued a trapped rider and rushed him to Komfo Anokye Hospital.
Ofori, who is in police custody, claimed that a brake failure at the Krofrom traffic intersection caused him to lose control. ASP Asore said the steep, busy stretch will be investigated for safety concerns and drivers of towed vehicles have been asked to provide statements.
The incident caused heavy congestion as authorities worked to clear the scene. The police will continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the crash.
