Ghanaian actor and film producer Yvonne Okoro took to Joy FM’s Showbiz A‑Z, hosted by Kwame Dadzie, to voice her frustration over the lukewarm reception of local films. She said that, despite the hard work of Ghanaian producers, audiences often find faults in their work rather than supporting the productions.
“We do not support our own. Everything Ghanaian, we see it as sub‑standard. And when you say this, people get offended by it, but it’s the truth,” Okoro said. She added that viewers watch poor‑quality foreign movies and clap, yet dismiss a Ghanaian film that is equally bad as proof that local filmmakers cannot do good movies.
Okoro highlighted that when a Ghanaian film delivers quality, audiences still hesitate to watch it, claiming they were unaware of its existence. She urged the public to change this mindset and give local cinema a fair chance.
The actress, whose credits include Beyonce: The President’s Daughter, Single Six and Ghana Must Go, also noted her recent role in Agency for the Dead, a new film by Shirley Frimpong‑Manso that opened at Silverbird Cinemas on 30 October 2026.
Okoro’s comments come amid ongoing discussions on how to revamp Ghana’s film industry. She called for stronger marketing and audience engagement to elevate the sector’s profile.
