The Kenyasi No. 1 Anglican Junior High School in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region has finally been lifted out of a decade of deteriorating conditions. Weak roofs, cracked walls, broken windows and potholed floors had made daily lessons a hazardous affair, according to headteacher Opoku Agyemang.
On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the school was officially commissioned after a $600,000 investment by the Underground Mining Alliance (UMA), a service provider at the Newmont Ahafo South mine. Agyemang thanked UMA for the timely intervention, noting that the renovated facility now guarantees the physical safety and comfort of both students and staff.
The project aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 9, advancing Target 4.a to build and upgrade safe, inclusive, and non‑violent education facilities. It also reinforces SDG 11 by showcasing how localised leadership can protect vulnerable rural populations when state resources are strained.
Bertha Yeboah, Human Resource Supervisor and CSR Team Lead for UMA‑Subika, highlighted the company’s commitment to restoring a safer teaching environment for the Kenyasi community. District Director of Education Naomi Asantewaa thanked UMA for lifting a significant financial burden off the district assembly and called on all stakeholders to protect the new infrastructure. She added that the renovated classroom block joins a growing portfolio of UMA‑Subika‑led interventions, including scholarships, apprenticeship awards, reading festivals and teaching material support.
With the upgraded facilities in place, the school is poised to improve academic performance and provide a secure learning environment for its students.
