The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has commenced system restoration procedures following a major power disturbance that affected the National Interconnected Transmission System in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., resulting in the simultaneous tripping of several generating plants across the national power system and causing widespread electricity supply interruptions.
Restoration Operations Underway
In an official statement, the power transmission company assured the public that engineers and system operators were deployed immediately to return power to affected areas.
"GRIDCo has activated its established system restoration procedures. Our engineers and system operators are working continuously, in close collaboration with power sector stakeholders, to restore power within the shortest time possible without compromising safety," the statement read.
Technical Probe Launched
Alongside the emergency response, GRIDCo confirmed that a full-scale technical investigation is currently underway to pinpoint the root cause of the unexpected trip.
"At the same time, a comprehensive technical investigation has commenced to determine the precise cause of this system event," the company stated.
GRIDCo apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused by the outage, expressing appreciation for the public's patience while work continues to fully stabilize the national grid. The company pledged to provide further updates as restoration progresses.
