Ghanaian delegates attending the 2026 International Youth Festival (IYF) in Ekaterinburg, Russia, could become key players in deepening Ghana‑Russia relations, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Russia Centre for Commerce and Relations, John Aggrey, said on Thursday.
The festival, running from 11 to 17 September, has already drawn more than 10,000 young people from 191 countries, including Ghana and several other African nations. Aggrey said the event offers a rare, concentrated opportunity for Ghanaian youth to engage in entrepreneurship, technology, media, education and culture.
"Every young Ghanaian who returns from Ekaterinburg with new contacts and new ideas becomes a potential bridge for that work," Aggrey said. He added that the Centre’s mandate is to convert such goodwill into concrete commercial and institutional ties, including trade linkages, investment interest, education and technology partnerships.
He highlighted that while government agreements anchor bilateral relations, grassroots familiarity between citizens sustains them. Interactions between Ghanaian delegates and Russian entrepreneurs or tech professionals could eventually lead to business partnerships, scholarships or joint ventures.
"A Ghanaian delegate who sits across from a Russian tech founder or an entrepreneur this week isn’t just having a cultural exchange; they’re forming the kind of relationship that turns into a business partnership, a scholarship lead, or a joint venture two or three years from now," Aggrey said. He noted that the value of such festivals compounds over time.
Aggrey also pointed to Ghana’s participation alongside a strong contingent of African nations as evidence of young Africans’ growing determination to shape their own destinies on the global stage. He said Ghana’s presence in the festival is therefore significant for the future direction of Ghana‑Russia relations.
