A U.S. embassy staffer was arrested at his south London flat on allegations of possessing indecent images of children. The individual, who worked at the embassy in Vauxhall, was flown back to the United States on a commercial flight in August, before British police could question him.
The U.S. Embassy confirmed that authorities are investigating the claims and that the staffer has been reassigned to the United States while inquiries continue. Embassy officials said, "The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously." They added that they had "quickly informed UK law enforcement and took swift action."
Although not a diplomat, the employee enjoyed diplomatic protection. Home Office ministers and the Metropolitan Police are reportedly in close contact with the U.S. embassy as investigations proceed. A UK government spokesperson said, "We expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by our laws, in the same way we expect all UK diplomats to do so when posted overseas."
The investigation is ongoing in conjunction with UK authorities. The case raises questions about the handling of serious allegations involving diplomatic staff and the procedures for questioning before removal from the country.
