Coventry City's long-awaited return to the Premier League began with a harsh reality check on Friday, as Frank Lampard's side were beaten 3-0 by champions Arsenal in the season's curtain-raiser at the Emirates Stadium.
The Sky Blues, who won the Championship title by 11 points last season after scoring 97 goals, the most in the division, had no answer for their hosts, falling behind inside 15 minutes to a Kai Havertz strike before Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal's lead before half time. Martin Ødegaard added a third early in the second half to complete the rout.
It capped a difficult evening for a club making its first appearance in the English top flight since being relegated in 2001, a gap of 25 years, the longest such absence in Premier League history. Lampard had strengthened his squad over the summer with signings including winger Loum Tchaouna, defender Aurele Amenda, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, alongside a deadline addition in striker Taiwo Awoniyi, but a makeshift attack, missing the injured Haji Wright, struggled to make an impact against a well-organised Arsenal defence.
Despite the scoreline, Coventry's underlying numbers from last season, top scorers and best defence in the Championship, suggest they will not simply capitulate as the season progresses. Lampard's side next face a home fixture as they look to open their points account in the coming weeks, with the manager likely to make changes as his squad adjusts to the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League.
