Three suspected members of a robbery gang have been killed in a shootout with police in the Savannah Region, as investigations continue into a GH¢430,000 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market.
The robbery occurred on June 29, 2026, when four armed men attacked two Mobile Money vendors at the market, firing sporadically before escaping with the money. Police say the gang was armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 assault rifle.
The Savannah Regional Police Command, working with the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, arrested one suspect, 28-year-old Yacouba Oumar, at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23, following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.
According to police, Oumar admitted taking part in the robbery and named three accomplices: Yakubu Seidu, alias Baba; Abdulai Aziz Yahaya, alias Addo; and Abduli Buipe, alias Addo. He also told investigators that the gang had been contracted to carry out the robbery by a cattle trader at the Buipe market, identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu.
The investigation subsequently led police teams to Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, where other suspected members of the syndicate were believed to be hiding. Police said an exchange of gunfire broke out during operations to apprehend the suspects, in which Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and a third suspect, Oumaro Amadu, were killed. Their bodies have been deposited at a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Police also recovered a pump-action gun with five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun, which they believe were used in the robbery.
Oumar remains in police custody and continues to assist with the investigation. Police say efforts are ongoing to arrest Alhaji Yacouba and other persons allegedly connected to the robbery.
