A fire that broke out in the Cantonments area of Accra on Sunday, September 20, resulted in the death of a young girl, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) on Wednesday, September 23.
The ministry expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and others affected by the incident, stating it shared in their grief and urged parents, guardians and caregivers to take practical steps to protect children from potential hazards at home and elsewhere.
Households were advised to keep matches, lighters and other fire sources out of children’s reach, ensure electrical appliances and installations are safe, and avoid leaving young children unattended. The ministry also encouraged basic fire‑safety measures, emergency evacuation plans and age‑appropriate instruction on what to do in an emergency.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the blaze, and the ministry called for a thorough inquiry to establish the cause of the fire, believing this would provide clarity and help prevent similar tragedies.
While the statement did not disclose details about the circumstances or the child’s identity, it stressed that protecting children is a shared responsibility among families, caregivers, communities and relevant institutions.
The MoGCSP extended its sympathies to the bereaved family, wishing them strength and comfort as they cope with the loss.
