The Busuama MA Basic School in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region is operating with only six teachers, a drastic reduction from the nine it had last year. The school, which serves Busuama and surrounding villages, now has three teachers for Primary 1–6 and three for Junior High School (JHS) 1–3, while the kindergarten—home to more than 120 pupils—has no teacher at all.
Headmaster Nawang Moses explained that the shortfall began when three teachers were transferred without replacements. The kindergarten’s former instructor was a volunteer who also left, leaving the youngest learners without any adult supervision or instruction.
With only three teachers covering six primary classes, a rotation system is in place, compromising lesson quality. At the JHS level, the same three teachers are responsible for nine subjects, a workload that is already reflected in the school’s declining academic performance.
In addition to staffing woes, the school lacks basic furniture; kindergarten pupils have no chairs, further hampering learning. Mr Moses appealed to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, the Kintampo North Municipal Assembly and NGOs for immediate teacher postings and provision of furniture and learning materials.
Parents and community members fear that the future of these children hangs in the balance as the school struggles to function. The situation underscores the broader challenges of rural education in Ghana, where teacher deployment and infrastructure deficits continue to undermine quality schooling.
