Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, the Member of Parliament for Effiduase‑Asokore, filed a claim against Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, head pastor of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, and the church on 11 September 2026. The suit seeks GH¢10 million in damages for alleged defamatory statements made on 6 September 2026 that the MP says denigrated his image, integrity and reputation.
The claim alleges that Rev. Owusu Bempah used the church’s platform to accuse the MP of working with thugs to attack the pastor and the church during a service. The MP argues that these statements were published on several social media channels, exposing him to ridicule and damaging his standing among constituents and the wider Ghanaian society.
According to the statement of claim, the church failed to dissociate itself from the alleged remarks or issue an apology. After the MP warned the pastor on social media and requested a retraction, Rev. Owusu Bempah allegedly responded on the K‑Lover Media platform, hosted by Bra Kojo, that he was prepared to face legal action.
"The Plaintiff says that accusing him of working with others to attack him and his church has lowered his standing and image in the estimation of right‑thinking members of the Ghanaian society and in particular citizens of Effiduase – Asokore constituency," the statement of claim reads.
The MP contends that the comments were made maliciously and without due care, knowing his position as an MP and his potential interest in contesting the seat again in the 2028 general elections. He claims the remarks were calculated to portray him as lacking the moral standing to hold public office and unworthy of his constituents’ trust.
In addition to the monetary claim, Dr Afriyie seeks an order compelling the defendants to retract the statements and issue an unqualified apology on the same platforms, with the apology remaining for 14 days. He also requests a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from making similar defamatory statements, plus costs and legal fees.
The case was filed by Ohene Gyan & Associates, and the High Court in Accra will determine whether the alleged statements meet the threshold for defamation and whether the damages sought are justified.
