The Ashanti Regional chapter of the Association of Educational Accountants (AEA) Ghana hosted a major workshop on 24 September 2026, focusing on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), procurement, tax and audit to bolster financial management in schools.
Accountants and finance officers from senior high schools and other educational institutions gathered to learn how to prepare accurate, internationally accepted financial statements and comply fully with the Procurement Act and tax laws.
Dr William Kwame Amankra Appiah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, urged headmasters and headmistresses to work closely with their accountants, stressing mutual respect, teamwork and open communication as essential for transparency and smooth administration.
He warned that failure to follow due process in procurement or to adhere to public financial laws could lead to audit queries and summons before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, with some accountants already facing prosecution.
Mr Yousef Owusu Akusa, AEA Ashanti Regional Chairman, explained that the training was designed to equip members with the knowledge needed to avoid breaches of the Procurement Act and to act as ethical advisors to school leaders.
Both officials called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to release operational funds on time, noting that delays in capitation grants and subventions hinder effective financial planning.
The workshop concluded with a call for professionalism, integrity and a spirit of collaboration, with the aim of enhancing accountability and sustainable development in the Ashanti Region and across Ghana.
