The Apinto Royal Family, based in the Apinto Traditional Area of Wassa Fiase in the Western Region, filed a petition with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee (NEC) on 28 October 2026. The petition requests the disqualification of the party’s Western Regional Chairman, Nana Kwabena Obo II, who is also known privately as Kojo Achempong and popularly as Nana Toku.
The family argues that Nana Kwabena Obo II, the Akyeamehene of the Apinto Traditional Area and enstooled on 28 September 2006, is a gazetted chief listed in the National Register of Chiefs (Serial No. 1135). Under Article 276(1) of the 1992 Constitution, a recognised traditional ruler cannot participate in active party politics while holding a stool.

Petitioners Ebusuapanyin Kweku Oduro, Head of the Apinto Royal Family, Martin Anane and Regina Adjei contend that, despite his traditional status, Nana Kwabena Obo II has actively engaged in NDC activities and currently occupies the Western Regional Chairmanship. They allege that his bid for re‑election raises constitutional eligibility questions that the party’s national leadership must resolve before the regional elections.

The petition includes a certified extract from the National Register of Chiefs as evidence of the chairman’s traditional office. The family seeks an investigation into his status and a determination of whether his political involvement complies with constitutional provisions.
Further developments will depend on the NEC’s review of the petition and any subsequent actions by the NDC leadership regarding the chairman’s eligibility for the forthcoming elections.
