In a candid interview, Xabi Alonso praised Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, saying the Brazilian’s style mirrors that of former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema and that he is on a level comparable to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
The 24‑year‑old has netted two goals and supplied two assists in his first three Premier League matches, earning the Player of the Month award and surpassing teammate Cole Palmer.
Joao Pedro signed a new contract with Stamford Bridge last month, extending his stay until 2034, and was handed the club’s number nine shirt at the season’s start.
He became Chelsea’s first striker since Diego Costa to score 20 goals in a debut campaign, and has tallied 25 goals and 11 assists in 57 appearances for the club.
Alonso noted Haaland’s goal‑scoring prowess but highlighted Pedro’s versatility, having played as a midfielder, number 10 and winger throughout his career.
Speaking of Benzema, Alonso remarked, “In many ways he reminds me of Benzema – he’s good in the box, out of the box, on his left side, with the head, very complete and intelligent.”
Despite being omitted from Brazil’s World Cup squad, Pedro has been recalled for September’s internationals against New Zealand and India.
Alonso added that the setback had not diminished Pedro’s motivation, stating, “He already had enough within him… We are now focused on what he is doing well and what he can do better.”
With a clear goal to have a great campaign and score many goals, Pedro’s early form suggests he is poised to make a significant impact in the Premier League.
