US Announces Visa Curbs for Certain South African Nationals

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that the United States will impose a new visa restriction on certain South African nationals. The policy, introduced as part of the Trump administration’s broader cooling of ties with Pretoria, targets individuals who are “responsible for, or complicit in, the enactment or implementation of laws or policies that enable uncompensated land seizures, race‑based discrimination, and/or the incitement of imminent violence against members of minority ethnic or racial groups in South Africa.”

Rubio said the U.S. had not seen adequate progress from the South African government on these concerns. The South African embassy in Washington has not yet responded to a request for comment. Pretoria maintains that there is no evidence of discrimination or persecution against white people and that claims of white racial superiority threaten the country’s post‑apartheid unity.

The visa curbs come amid a series of U.S. actions against South Africa, including cuts to aid, the expulsion of the country’s ambassador and the administration’s repeated claims of a “white genocide” in the nation. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for global efforts to debunk such false narratives.

While the statement did not name any individuals, it signals a tightening of U.S. diplomatic engagement with South Africa as the Trump administration continues to criticize the country’s land reform policies and its stance on the Gaza conflict.

The U.S. will monitor the situation closely and may adjust the policy as new information emerges.
