The University of Professional Studies (UPSA) in Accra has announced that it will not allow certain students to graduate after an investigation uncovered the manipulation of more than 500 academic results. The Vice Chancellor, Prof Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, said the probe identified 178 individuals who breached the university’s system to alter grades.
During the 18th Congregation, Prof Mawutor revealed that some students admitted to paying unscrupulous individuals to change their results, while others confessed to collecting money from classmates to facilitate similar changes. He added that a number of the accused had already been scheduled to graduate, but the university’s Information Systems and Technology Directorate (ISTD) and investigative committee have withheld their conferral pending further disciplinary action.
Prof Mawutor described the incident as “highly unacceptable” and noted that although result manipulation was not new to UPSA, the sheer magnitude of the latest case made it particularly serious. He praised the ISTD and the investigative committee for detecting the alterations and identifying those involved, and confirmed that the university would continue to address the matter through its investigative and disciplinary processes.
