The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced a new partnership to tackle maternal mortality in the region during a mid‑year review meeting with key stakeholders.
UNFPA representative Ishmael Kwasi Selassie highlighted that Ghana’s maternal death rate remains alarmingly high, citing figures in the 300s and stressing the need to bring the number down to meet the Sustainable Development Goal target for the region.
Selassie revealed that UNFPA is collaborating with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across Greater Accra to establish a task force that will track the implementation of recommendations from maternal death audits.
The Gender Department of UNFPA is also conducting community outreach to address gender‑based violence, child marriage, teenage pregnancy and transactional sex, with a particular focus on commercial motorcycle riders known locally as Okada riders.
Both organisations have reaffirmed their commitment to ending maternal mortality in Greater Accra as part of broader efforts to achieve the SDG on maternal health.
