Thousands of supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took to the streets on Thursday as part of the party’s “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration, with many participants openly throwing their support behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The demonstration, which was organised to protest what the NPP describes as growing threats to Ghana’s democratic institutions, drew party faithful from across the country. Amid chants, placards and party colours, supporters repeatedly declared that “the street is for Bawumia now,” signalling the former Vice President’s growing grassroots appeal ahead of the NPP’s 2026 presidential primaries.
Several demonstrators expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, describing him as the party’s strongest candidate to lead the NPP into the next general election. They argued that his experience in government and his vision for the country make him the preferred choice among the party’s rank and file.
While the protest was primarily focused on concerns over governance and democracy, it also highlighted the internal momentum building around Dr. Bawumia’s presidential ambitions.
The demonstration formed part of a broader campaign by the opposition party to draw public attention to what it says are challenges confronting Ghana’s democratic system, while simultaneously energising its support base ahead of the 2026 political season.
