On Wednesday, September 23, George Kweku Ricketts‑Hagan, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South and Deputy Majority Leader, assumed the role of Head of Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament. He succeeded Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, the MP for Effutu and Minority Leader, who formally handed over the position as part of a planned transition.
Afenyo‑Markin will remain a member of the Ghanaian delegation and continue as Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament until 2028. He pledged ongoing support for Ricketts‑Hagan, expressing confidence in his parliamentary experience and understanding of regional integration.
"I have every confidence that he will bring to this responsibility his considerable experience, commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and understanding of the importance of regional integration. I wish him well in this new responsibility and assure him of my continual support and goodwill as he takes up the mantle of leadership," Afenyo‑Markin said.
Ricketts‑Hagan’s appointment is expected to strengthen Ghana’s influence within ECOWAS, as he brings a robust track record in parliamentary affairs and regional cooperation.
