On Monday, September 21, President John Dramani Mahama addressed Ghanaians at home and abroad, urging them to draw inspiration from the vision and legacy of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the country marked Founder’s Day.
In a message shared on social media, Mahama said the occasion provides an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence struggle and his broader vision for Africa. He highlighted Nkrumah’s commitment to liberty, Pan‑African unity and self‑reliance as the foundation that positioned Ghana as a symbol of hope on the global stage.
The President noted that Nkrumah’s belief in Africans’ capacity to manage their own affairs remains relevant to Ghana’s national identity and aspirations. “The black man is capable of managing his own affairs” remains the bedrock of national pride, Mahama added.
Mahama cautioned that while Ghana achieved political independence under Nkrumah, the broader task of building a prosperous and equitable society is unfinished. He called for a collective effort to achieve economic freedom and social justice, urging Ghanaians to rise above division and work tirelessly toward a stronger, more resilient country.
His message forms part of national commemorations marking Founder’s Day, which coincides with Nkrumah’s birthday on September 21.
