Thai police arrested 66‑year‑old Phra Wachirayan Wi, a former abbot of the 14th‑century Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, on suspicion of embezzling 100 million baht (about $3 million) from his monastery. The monk allegedly diverted funds meant for temple renovations and for the sale of his own highly‑coveted coin amulet on more than 20 occasions between 2022 and 2024.
During a raid of his residence on Thursday, officers seized more than 100 million baht in cash and gold bars, along with 35 gold amulets and jewellery worth an estimated 6 million baht. Police also found CCTV footage of Wi having sex with a woman on his dining table, a violation of the Buddhist vow of celibacy.
The woman, identified as 47‑year‑old Punyavee Rungrueang, was arrested on charges of abetting a state official in illegal activities. She has been accused of helping Wi manage the embezzled proceeds, with tens of millions of baht reportedly moving through her bank accounts each year.
Lead police investigator Pattanasak Bupphasuwan said that the money Wi issued in the temple’s name never entered the temple’s account. Wi was defrocked after his arrest and has yet to comment publicly. The case follows a 2023 scandal in which senior monks were found to have had sex with a woman who blackmailed them for nearly $12 million.
Investigators began probing the matter in mid‑July after an anonymous tip alleged misconduct and misuse of temple funds. They say two or three other people could be involved.
Police will continue to review the financial records and investigate any further accomplices. The case highlights ongoing concerns about financial crimes within Thailand’s Buddhist community.
