Kylian Mbappe, 27, criticised a viral meme that superimposes his face on the body of a dictator, saying it demonstrates a lack of political and human awareness.
Speaking to France Football, the forward acknowledged the meme’s “funny side” but warned that it downplays serious issues. He added that being compared to figures who have caused harm throughout history is “not something I have done.”
Mbappe noted that some fans use the image to highlight his dominance on the pitch, while others suggest it reflects his influence at clubs. He also referenced the nickname “Mobut” given to him by teammate Ousmane Dembele during the 2026 World Cup, a nickname derived from Mobutu Sese Seko, the former dictator of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He said the nickname was taken from social media and was meant in jest, contrasting it with the more serious implications of the meme.
Mbappe’s comments come as the meme circulates on social media, prompting discussions about the fine line between humor and disrespect in online content.
