On Monday, September 21, President John Dramani Mahama addressed the Accra Reset, insisting that the world’s escalating tensions should not postpone Ghana’s push for structural reforms. He argued that crises can spark fresh ideas, partnerships and transformative policies.
Speaking before a gathering of policymakers and international partners, the President stated, “Crisis is precisely why and when new paradigms are forged.” He highlighted health as a cornerstone of the global reset, noting its essential role in safeguarding human wellbeing.
Mahama singled out maternal and child health as a key test for the proposed reset. He warned that sub‑Saharan Africa continues to bear a heavy burden of maternal deaths, and that Ghana remains three times above the Sustainable Development Goal target for maternal mortality. “This is unacceptable,” he said, calling for renewed action and international collaboration to strengthen health systems and improve outcomes.
Looking ahead, the President urged that the scale of the challenge demands bold, coordinated efforts to bring Ghana’s health indicators in line with global standards.
