Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told students at Tarkwa Senior High School on Friday, September 18, that the government has made adequate provisions for meals as the 2026/2027 academic year begins. He added that President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a review of the SHS menu to improve the quality of food served to pupils.
Speaking as students returned to classes after the release of the new academic calendar by the Ghana Education Service, Iddrisu said, “I will follow further to examine the data and then we’ll ensure that you don’t lack food. We make adequate provision for your meals. I’m happy to announce that President Mahama has directed that we review your menu to make it better.”
The assurance comes amid the government’s efforts to tackle feeding challenges under the Free SHS programme. A total of GH¢9.6 billion has been earmarked for the programme, with GH¢4.2 billion allocated specifically for student feeding in 2026. President Mahama noted that the programme was initially introduced without a dedicated funding source, which caused delays and shortages. He said the administration has since established dedicated funding arrangements for Senior High Schools and their feeding programmes.
Iddrisu also revealed plans to increase the feeding grant from GH¢8 to GH¢15 per student as part of broader reforms. While the revised menu details and implementation date remain undisclosed, the move signals a concerted effort to address both the availability and quality of meals for SHS pupils.
Senior High and Senior High Technical School students resumed classes on September 18, with Form One and Two students in single‑track schools expected to finish the academic year on July 30, 2027, and Form Three students on June 18, 2027, coinciding with the 2027 WASSCE.
