President John Dramani Mahama and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held bilateral talks in Antigua and Barbuda on the sidelines of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, seeking to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Canada. The two leaders discussed ways to expand cooperation across sectors of mutual interest, with a particular focus on energy, critical minerals, trade and development.
President Mahama used the engagement to advocate for closer collaboration between countries that support multilateralism and a rules‑based international order, arguing for stronger partnerships in addressing shared global interests. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts to tackle common challenges and promote sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Carney, in turn, expressed Canada’s willingness to broaden its partnership with Ghana, identifying energy, critical minerals, trade and development as key areas for further engagement. He underscored Canada’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development agenda and fostering mutually beneficial trade relations.
The meeting forms part of a series of bilateral discussions President Mahama is holding with Commonwealth leaders attending the summit, as Ghana seeks to strengthen its diplomatic and economic partnerships.
