The Villa Vie Odyssey, a nearly 200‑metre luxury cruise ship, halted its 3.5‑year circumnavigation after fuel costs spiked to as high as $8,000 per cabin in parts of Asia. The U.S.-based operator announced the suspension on Tuesday, leaving passengers stranded in Cambodia while it works on disembarkation plans and temporary housing.

Although the ship can accommodate up to 650 passengers, the exact number aboard is unclear. Bloomberg reports that about 200 guests were on board when the order to disembark was issued. The vessel departed Belfast in October 2024 on a continuous voyage that had already spanned more than 750 days before the halt.

The operator said it had taken "significant steps to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port," but those measures could not offset the extraordinary rise in fuel costs, which have surged since the Iran war began earlier this year. Monthly fuel expenses per cabin in Asia have jumped from $1,800 to $8,000, the company noted.

Villa Vie Odyssey will spend the next 60 days on restructuring and recapitalisation, though it cautioned that no outcome is assured. The company also highlighted that passing the full cost increase onto residents is not realistic.

Passengers have access to amenities such as bars, restaurants, a pool deck and a pickleball court. Cabins range from $120,000 to $440,000 in permanent residency, or $3,500 a month for rentals.

The company remains engaged with passengers to arrange safe disembarkation and temporary accommodation while it navigates the financial challenges posed by the global fuel price surge.
