The Ghana Sports Fund (GSF) has unveiled plans to launch a pension contribution scheme for Ghanaian sportsmen and women. The initiative, led by Administrator Dr David Kofi Wuaku, seeks to provide long‑term financial security for athletes once they retire from active competition.
Speaking at a media engagement in Accra on Wednesday, September 9, Dr Wuaku explained that the scheme is a response to the widespread financial difficulties many former athletes face after their prime years. He noted that many former sports personalities who have represented Ghana on the international stage are often left without adequate support once they stop competing.
Under the proposed plan, athletes will be encouraged to contribute during their active years, saving toward a future pension. Dr Wuaku added that the Fund will identify those in need and offer assistance to improve their welfare. "We are trying to have a formal welfare system for all athletes," he said. "Most athletes are not on SNNIT. We are trying to come up with a scheme that will allow athletes in their active years to contribute and save towards their future."
Prof Koryoe Anim‑Wright, chair of the GSF board, pledged that the process of identifying and supporting beneficiaries would be transparent and accountable. She said the board would implement measures to ensure accurate selection and that assistance reached those who genuinely needed it.
The Ghana Sports Fund was established to mobilise resources for sports development and to improve the welfare of athletes and other sports professionals across the country.
What follows is the GSF’s roadmap for rolling out the pension scheme, which will be rolled out in phases with a focus on athletes facing financial challenges post‑retirement.
