The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended plans to raise public transport fares, saying further consultations with the government are required. The decision follows a meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, over a review of fares for the 2026 window.
Both unions had earlier proposed an upward adjustment in fares, but the government’s GH¢2.00 per litre intervention on diesel has prompted a reassessment of how fuel costs affect transport operations. “No decision to adjust transport fares has been taken,” the GPRTU and GRTCC said in a joint statement.

Representatives from the Ministry, the GPRTU and the GRTCC formed a joint team to review all cost inputs. The groups agreed that the fuel intervention’s impact must be weighed against any fare increase before a final decision is made. The exercise aims to ensure any eventual adjustment is fair to both operators and passengers.
The unions will communicate the outcome to the public in due course. Until then, existing approved fares remain in force nationwide. Drivers, station masters and transport owners are directed to maintain current rates and to remain calm, orderly and cooperative during the consultation process.
