The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has called for a reconsideration of proposed changes to the university’s statutes, citing concerns over staff participation and alumni governance.
In a statement dated 14 September 2026, GAUA‑KNUST warned that the draft statutes would remove staff voting in the selection of Pro Vice‑Chancellors by requiring appointments through search committees without staff votes. The association said the current system, where the Vice‑Chancellor nominates candidates for Convocation voting, should be retained or replaced with a transparent, competitive process that preserves staff involvement.
GAUA suggested that qualified staff could apply, be screened, and have three shortlisted candidates presented to Convocation for election. It also urged a similar collegial process for Dean appointments, with senior academics voting on openly contested candidates.
On the proposed inclusion of Statute 79 on the Alumni Association, GAUA argued that the Alumni Association should remain distinct from internal university structures. It noted that the existing Alumni Relations Office under the Registrar already links the university with its alumni, and called for replacing Statute 79 with an Alumni Relations Liaison Committee that would have an advisory role only.
The association remains open to dialogue with the University Council and other stakeholders, urging careful consideration of its concerns for the long‑term development of the university’s governance framework.
