The Forestry Commission has re‑emphasised its directive that all logs must be properly secured before they are transported from forest areas. The reminder comes after a video surfaced on social media showing a truck carrying logs reversing while trying to climb a steep road at Trede in the Ashanti Region. No casualties were reported.
Richmond Karikari, the Commission’s Area Manager for Timber Industry Development, told us that forestry officers must inspect and secure logs before issuing the required documentation for their movement. “Before the logs move from the forest gate, the officers make sure that the trees are fully secured. They secure the logs before they even issue them with the necessary documentation to move the truck through town,” he said.
Karikari added that the incident at Trede was reported to the police, who responded, secured the area, evacuated the logs and towed the trucks to the police station. “The issue was reported to the police. The police were there; they were able to secure the place, evacuate the logs, and then tow the trucks to the police station,” he added.
The commission urges all timber operators to comply with the safety protocol to prevent future incidents and ensure smooth transport of logs from forest gates to market.
