The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved a US$250,000 (approximately GH¢3 million) relief package to support victims of the severe flooding that recently swept through multiple regions in Ghana.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed the regional bloc's financial intervention in a public update on Monday, confirming that the Foreign Ministry had received official notification of the grant.
Directing Support to Affected Regions
The funding comes in the wake of torrential rains on June 29, 2026, which triggered widespread flooding across seven regions, displacing thousands of families and causing severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and property.
In his update, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized the government's commitment to openness regarding international aid.
"I wish to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that the Foreign Ministry has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GH¢3 million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods," the Minister stated.
Transparent Distribution Assured
The Foreign Minister assured the public that the financial package will be promptly transferred to the designated disaster management authorities once received to accelerate relief efforts on the ground.
Expressing gratitude to the regional authority, Mr. Ablakwa highlighted the strong diplomatic and humanitarian bonds within the sub-region.
"The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion," he added.
