Wa West MP Peter Toobu Calls Attacks on Soldiers a Disgrace to Ghana’s Democracy

Peter Toobu, the Member of Parliament for Wa West, condemned recent attacks on military personnel, calling direct confrontations with soldiers a disgrace to Ghana’s democracy. Speaking as Guest of Honour at the Land Combat Power Demonstration 2026 at the Battle Training Camp in Bundase on Friday, October 30, the MP urged Ghanaians to respect members of the Ghana Armed Forces and refrain from attacking or provoking them, regardless of their age or social standing.

Toobu noted that soldiers sometimes exercise restraint when confronted by civilians, despite having the capacity to respond. He explained that soldiers may choose restraint because of the civilian status of those confronting them, rather than an inability to defend themselves. The MP stressed that the military plays a critical role in protecting the country and its citizens, and must therefore be treated with respect.

“Let no Ghanaian, young or old, rich or poor, see a soldier in uniform and attack him or her for any reason. When you attack a soldier, and they are quiet, it’s not because they don’t have the capacity to neutralise you. It’s not because they don’t have the capacity to interdict you. It’s not because they don’t have the capacity to humble you. But sometimes they look at the civilian character in you, and they just smile in their manner and say, ‘You are blessed, and you are saved. Let’s respect our military. They have what it takes to protect all of us. And they have what it takes to humble all of us. Direct confrontation with our military officers is a disgrace to our democracy. Let’s stop it. Respect the Ghana Armed Forces. They will protect us. Respect your men and women in uniform,’ he advised.

The MP’s comments came after the Armed Forces demonstrated their combat capabilities during the exercise, which he said showed the military’s preparedness to defend Ghana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called on the public to recognize the soldiers’ professionalism and to avoid any actions that could undermine the nation’s democratic fabric.

Moving forward, Toobu urged citizens to channel any grievances through lawful channels and to support the Armed Forces in their mission to safeguard the nation. The MP’s statement underscores the importance of civilian-military harmony in maintaining Ghana’s democratic institutions.
