Opoku Afriyie, a sound system operator and commercial motorbike rider from Kenyasi No. 2, is in serious condition at Asutifi North District Hospital after an alleged machete assault by two prison officers and three inmates of Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison.
The incident reportedly took place on Thursday while Afriyie was transporting a passenger. He says a prison officer and three inmates intercepted him, accusing him of stealing yams from the officer’s farm, and attacked him with machetes, inflicting deep wounds on his arms, legs, abdomen, neck and other parts of his body.
Afriyie claims that a second prison officer later arrived, handcuffed him and transported him to the prison, where a third officer allegedly slapped him repeatedly before handing him over to Kenyasi Police. Police officers who witnessed the injuries arranged for Afriyie to be taken to the hospital.
Afriyie remains admitted, suffering severe pain in his abdomen, head, eyes and waist, and reports that some fingers and hands were severely affected. He has expressed concern that the alleged attackers have not yet been arrested and has appealed to authorities for a thorough investigation and for financial assistance to cover medical expenses.
The Asutifi District Police Command, headed by Superintendent Harold Yamoah Ponkor, has launched an investigation into the incident. Police are expected to provide further details as the inquiry proceeds.
