The Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (CETAG) has demanded an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the death of Abdulai Issaka, a Science Lecturer at Gbewa College of Education, following an alleged assault by military personnel during curfew hours on Friday, September 11, 2026.
In a statement released on Monday, September 14, CETAG said the information available to it suggests that the alleged assault resulted in Issaka’s death, describing the circumstances as deeply disturbing. The Association stressed that even if Issaka had violated the curfew, that could not justify the use of excessive or lethal force against him.
“Being outside during curfew hours, irrespective of the circumstances, can never justify the beating of a person to death,” the Association said.
CETAG condemned what it described as the reported use of excessive and lethal force and called for a thorough investigation to establish what happened before, during and after the alleged incident. It wants the investigation to identify the military personnel involved, establish the precise cause of Issaka’s death and determine whether any unlawful conduct occurred.
The Association also called on the Government, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and other relevant state institutions to ensure that the matter is investigated without intimidation, interference or protection for anyone because of rank or position. It further demanded that anyone found culpable be arrested, prosecuted and brought to justice in accordance with Ghanaian law.
“No person irrespective of position, uniform, or authority should be above the law,” CETAG said. The Association called on the authorities to provide Issaka’s family with full disclosure on the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that the bereaved family receives the necessary support.
CETAG also appealed for calm at the Gbewa College of Education, urging management, staff and students to exercise restraint and allow the investigative and judicial processes to take their course. It assured staff of the College that its national leadership would continue to engage the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Issaka’s death are properly investigated.
The Association extended its condolences to Issaka’s family, colleagues and friends, describing his death as a painful loss to the teaching profession, the College and the country. It said it would closely monitor developments and engage state institutions to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Issaka’s death are not ignored or swept under the carpet.
