Two people have been confirmed dead while seven others sustained injuries following a horrific road traffic accident at Abor Junction on the Mankessim–Accra Highway in the early hours of Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the Mankessim Fire Station received a distress call at 1:44 a.m., prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team alongside personnel from the National Ambulance Service.
The emergency team left the station a minute later and arrived at the crash scene at 2:01 a.m., where they found a badly damaged Toyota Voxy with registration number AS 8911-25.
According to the GNFS, nine occupants were involved in the crash. Two victims, one male and one female were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining seven, made up of five males and two females, suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Firefighters quickly secured the accident scene, assisted paramedics in rescuing the injured and ensured they received urgent medical attention.
Three of the injured were rushed to Mercy Women Catholic Hospital in Mankessim for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Saltpond Government Hospital.
Authorities say the cause of the accident remains under investigation. However, preliminary information indicates that the driver escaped the crash without sustaining any injuries.
After the rescue operation, firefighters cleared debris from the highway to restore normal traffic flow and prevent any further accidents.
The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on Ghana’s major highways, with investigations expected to determine what led to the fatal collision.
