Gospel singer Bernice Offei died yesterday at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy that includes the poignant track Life Is Short. The song was born from a simple family moment that made Offei realise how quickly life passes.
In a teenage interview, Offei recalled laughing at her parents’ need for reading glasses, finding the situation amusing. Years later, she found herself doing the same, and her children laughed at her, prompting a sudden reflection on the fleeting nature of time.
“I realized that, hey, it was just like yesterday,” she said. That moment of recognition became a reminder that life is short and that we must live with purpose. She channeled that truth into Life Is Short, urging listeners to consider their purpose and relationship with God.
Offei’s conviction deepened after the death of a young student from Archimedes School, whom she had visited to share the word of God. The tragedy reminded her of life’s fragility and the inevitability of standing before God one day.
