On Thursday, October 1, 2026, Zenith Bank Ghana Limited presented a GH¢150,000 cheque to the Childhood Cancer Unit at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also known as Ridge Hospital. The donation came with relief items for children undergoing cancer treatment.
Dr Nihad Salifu, Head of Paediatric Oncology and Director of Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana, highlighted the need for investment in childhood cancer care, noting that while it is an expensive business, it can be cured. He explained the unit’s growth from four or five patients in its first year to over 40 annually, stressing that the increasing numbers have strained the original four‑bed facility, now forcing the use of a playroom for outpatient chemotherapy.
Dr Salifu added that comprehensive care includes surgery, radiotherapy, nutritional and psychosocial support, all funded by the Foundation. She also reported that financial and transport challenges had previously led to treatment abandonment, but support from Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana has reduced the abandonment rate to zero.
Dr Leslie Issa Adam‑Zakariah, Medical Director of the hospital, praised the unit and the Foundation for easing the financial burden on the hospital, which often treats emergency cases before payment can be made. He said the hospital aims to develop the unit into a centre of excellence, describing the support as an investment in the most vulnerable children and families.
With the donation, the unit can continue to expand its services and improve infrastructure, ensuring that more children receive the comprehensive care they need.
