On Thursday evening, Tesla will formally launch its Semi electric trucks at the inauguration of its Sparks, Nevada plant, the company announced on its website and social media. The Semi, designed for long‑haul freight and capable of up to 500 miles on a single charge, first appeared to the public in 2017 and was slated for production in 2019.
The first truck eventually rolled off the high‑volume production line in April, and Tesla had aimed to begin volume production this year. However, the July shareholder letter pushed the start of production to 2026, cancelling the earlier forecast.
By entering the commercial freight market, Tesla expands beyond its electric sedans and SUVs at a time when U.S. diesel prices have hit record highs. The company began limited deliveries to customers such as PepsiCo in late 2022, but delays, rising competition and shifting EV policies have raised demand concerns.
Despite these challenges, a coalition of the world’s largest cargo‑owning shippers—including Microsoft and PepsiCo—placed an order for 2,500 Semis this week, nearly double the size of the existing U.S. electric Class 8 fleet, according to the clean‑transportation nonprofit Catalyst Mobility.
Last month, Swedish freight technology firm Einride AB announced a deal to add 500 semi‑trucks to its fleet. Tesla has said the Nevada factory will run at an annual capacity of up to 50,000 units. Investors and fans are now eager for details on production ramp‑up, pricing and major customer names.
As the launch unfolds, stakeholders will watch how Tesla navigates the commercial trucking landscape and whether the Semi can meet the growing demand for electric freight solutions.
