The Ghana Education Service (GES) announced it is operating 24/7 to address the outstanding payment issues affecting about 59,000 to 60,000 teachers and to prevent any disruption to the academic calendar.
Daniel Fenyi, GES head of public relations, said the priority is to ensure teachers receive their salaries rather than engage in blame games. He added that the Education Minister had met with teacher unions and assured them of concerted efforts to resolve the matter.
Fenyi explained that GES has been directed to work closely with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to provide the required documentation, including input forms and promotion letters. The 4 p.m. deadline, linked to the provision of these forms, was set because the controller deemed them crucial for the department’s work.
He clarified that the broader figure of more than 80,000 affected staff includes both teaching and non‑teaching personnel, but the immediate focus remains on the 60,000 teachers. GES is already meeting the requested deadlines and believes that automatic placement could have been used given the circumstances.
Fenyi assured teachers that GES would continue to work around the clock to meet their needs and to allow them to return to classrooms. He also emphasized that protecting the academic calendar remains a key concern and that the Service has stabilised the calendar to avoid disruptions.
GES staff at headquarters are already working to meet the Monday 4 p.m. deadline for the required documentation, with a week to comply. The Service maintains a positive outlook and is committed to resolving the payment crisis swiftly.
