Societe Generale Ghana Denies BOA, Access Bank Takeover Rumours

Societe Generale Ghana PLC announced on September 9 that media reports claiming Bank of Africa (BOA) and Access Bank were competing to acquire a majority stake in the bank were unverified and had not been issued by either Societe Generale Ghana or its parent, Societe Generale Group.

The clarification was issued under Section 71 of Part IX of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Listing Rules for the Equities Market, which obliges listed companies to disclose any information that could affect the market or to clarify unverified reports.

While the announcement does not confirm or deny any potential transaction, it establishes that, as of the disclosure, the takeover claims had not been formally communicated by the bank or its group.

For investors, the statement is significant because rumours of a change in ownership can influence share price, ownership structure and strategic direction. By distancing itself from the reports, Societe Generale Ghana aims to prevent market participants from making decisions based on unverified information.

Any confirmed change in majority ownership would have broader implications for the bank’s strategy, capital position, management direction and competitive stance within Ghana’s banking sector. Until further disclosure, market participants should differentiate between speculation and officially disclosed information.
