Abdul Aziz, a 24‑year‑old tricycle rider, was handed a three‑month prison sentence by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region. The conviction followed a biting incident that occurred on 3 September 2026, when Aziz was intercepted by officers from the Nkawie Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
Police Inspector Kwaku Frimpong, the prosecuting officer, told the court that the officers, led by Chief Inspector Abedi Larbi, were on official patrol duty at about 8:40 am. They stopped Aziz, who was operating a Pragya tricycle bearing registration number M‑25‑A‑3722, after discovering he lacked a valid license and other required documents.
While being escorted to the police office, Aziz deviated from the prescribed route. The Community Police Assistant, Alhassan Seidu, instructed him to take the right direction to the station, but Aziz refused and attacked the officer. A struggle ensued, during which Aziz bit Seidu on the chest. The officer shouted for help, and nearby youths intervened to restrain Aziz.
In his court statement, Aziz pleaded guilty to the charge of negligently causing harm. The judge, Mr Robert Addo, accepted his plea and imposed the three‑month sentence. The case underscores the importance of compliance with traffic regulations and the seriousness of assaulting law‑enforcement officers.
Police officials have urged tricycle riders to ensure they possess all necessary documentation before operating on public roads. The court’s decision serves as a warning to others who may consider defying traffic enforcement.
