Archibald Gamor Korletey, who is vying for the National Organiser slot in the New Patriotic Party’s upcoming national executive elections, dismissed the relevance of pre‑election polls. Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, September 25, he said delegates could shift their preferences before voting day, making polls an unreliable predictor of the outcome.
“The polls do not determine who becomes a winner. The elections are won on the D-Day,” Korletey told the programme. He added that internal party contests differ from general elections, noting that a delegate might express support for one candidate in a poll but vote for another when the actual election takes place.
“So, when you call me as a chairman, I can tell you I’m voting for A. However, my mind will change on the D-Day to vote for B,” he explained. Korletey expressed no concern over polls that did not rank him among the front runners in the National Organiser race, even saying he prefers that such polls remain unmentioned.
His remarks come after polls released by organisations such as Global InfoAnalytics ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections. Korletey argued that the party’s internal election structure renders such polls less predictive, as the final decision is made by delegates assembled on election day.
“The day of the elections, because we are grouping at one location. If it is the issue of doing it in the regions, that is a different thing altogether. But once we are on the ground, the decision is taken there,” he said. The NPP is scheduled to elect its national officers on October 3 in Kumasi, with seven candidates contesting the National Organiser position. Korletey is number three on the ballot.
Observers will watch to see whether the delegates’ day‑of decisions align with the pre‑campaign sentiment or if the polls prove a useful gauge of internal party dynamics.
